OUGD404: What is a book - Week 1.

Today we began to look at the contents of a book and how a book is built. The Fibonacci sequence is used to format pages so that they are proportional.
The fibonacci sequence appears in nature, as it does the human scale, and is considered the perfect sequence for correct proportion.
The Fibonacci sequence ratio is 8:13.

0+1 = 1
1+2= 3
2+3= 5
3+5= 8
5+8= 13
8+13= 21
13+21= 34
21+34= 55
34+55= 89

Why do the proportions work in the way they do? Articulate the golden ratio.

We then to create our own physical versions of the golden ratio. Drawing a square, doubling the square number 1, and placing it on top of the original square, take the size of these two shapes put together and placing it to the left hand side, this system is repeated and the squares added in a clockwise manner, following the spiral shape in which the sequence would create.

We then created another physical version working in the opposite manner, take a piece of paper and diving the longest side, by 1.62 - the golden number, creating a square and a rectangle. taking the rectangle again and diving the longest side again by 1.62 to create a new square and rectangle etc.

Rule of third.
The golden ratio can be simplified in the rule of thirds. This gives the ability to find points of interest quickly. Divide image into 3 columns and rows to give 9 boxes. the centre box, more so the 4 corners of the centre box is where the eye naturally looks.

Designers use the grid produced by the rule of thirds to determine where important piece of information are placed.

The second magazine I looked at 'GLAMOUR' is slightly more expensive and upscale publication. I found that this magazine followed the rule of thirds. I also found due to the following of this rule, parts of the page could be switched around and still look successful.

We then took pages from different magazines and constructed a layout mixing sections from each magazine to create a format that we thought was aesthetically pleasing. I have taken a page from more magazine and the sunday express magazine. I have done a few different layouts that I thought worked well.
