OUGD404: The Anatomy of Type - Part 3.

As I was ill for the session.

'Type is speech Made visible.'

Identifont is not just for identifying typefaces but also gives outlets and links to find more out about Type.

Print changed and developed the way type was developed.

It was all pushed by the growth of people that could read - Without reading type was pointless.

Type Is a visualisation of Oral communication.

Typeface - A collection of characters, letters, numbers, symbols, which all have the same distinct design. 

Font - The physical means made to create a font. 

Four weights of font make a typeface.
Block - Headers
Gothic - Sans serif
Roman - Serif
Script - Brush

Regular - Original weight/ dimensions of a typeface.
Regular italic - "" and italic.
Light Italic - Light weight and italic.
Bold weight - Bold weight and italic. 
Ultra bold condensed - Ultra bold weight but condensed typeface.

Legibility is based on the counters in a typeface.
Even when the letterforms are not even, these we can identify the meanings in.


Subliminal communication in counters in between the E and x in the FedEx logo.
Arrow is constructed through negative space/ counters between the letters.

And The open government converse logo in which when rotated 90 degrees right, the image changes, and it forms an opinion which many hold of the government.

Sans serif are more legible 12-14pt.
Serif are more legible 9-12 pt.
Legibility- Is the degree in which we identify individual letters / glyphs based upon understandable and recognisable appearance. (The clarity of individual letters)
Readability - The ease in which text can be read and understood influenced by length, primary or secondary, leading, justification, type style, kerning, tracking, point size etc.
Primary Leading - The space between letters.
Secondary Leading - Small sections of space to separate further.
Tracking - Expanding the space between letters.
Kerning - Decreasing the space between letters.
Never use more than 3 typefaces/ fonts.
