OUGD504: Design for web - Studio Brief 2 intro.

History of the internet.
The internet was invented in 1991 at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.
The home of the God Particle.
Tim Berners- Lee wanted to make a way that scientists in different sectors of CERN could share information without having to print, travel with and pass the message on by hand.
The internet started with a community of 150 computers at CERN from their it got bigger and better until it eventually went worldwide.
Websites were/are all hosted on web servers.
The worlds first web srver was built by Steve Jobs, founder of Apple inc, called a NeXT computer.
All websites were started on this website.
Initially websites were text based.

The first image went live on the web in 1992 and was a PNG.
It was an image of the Les Horribles Cernets.
To be displayed on the web images have to be in a universal file format.
The most common file format on the web today is the JPEG.

HTML & CSS Design and build websites.

Skeuomorphism.
- Imitate something that it is not.
Giving something a texture eg. newstand app, imitates a bookcase.
reading a book on screen - flipping the pages.
Software calendar that imitates the appearence of binding on a paper desk calendar.

Responsive Design.
Website can be adapted to different media and a range of scales and formats eg. phone, ipad, computer. The website adjusts depending what screen size you view it on. This was introduced by french designer Ethan Marcotte.

Design
Massimon Vingnelli grids are still used in the modern web.
When viewing a website ask:
What is the point?
Is it going to serve a purpose?

What is the purpose of the website?
Who are the target audience?
What do the target audience need from the audience?

Task:
Visit websites and write down gut feelings, then find out what they are trying to communicate.

The navigational pages are very disappointing however compared to the homepage with seemingly little thought gone into the designs, using basic text in a common typeface with little or no imagery.

- Simple
- Easy to use
-Navigational
- Minimalist.
- Might be trying to move away from regular tattoo parlours, in which the websites are sometimes focused on drawings of tattoos and can appear very cluttered. Still has tattoo inspired font, however this is controlled via the minimalistic background.

2. http://www.galaxion.com/

- Tacky
- Animation
- Flashy
- Uncoordinated
- All over the place.
Have 3 players which do not function with the website.
Trying to capture your attention, captures it for the wrong reasons.

3. http://www.constellation7.org/Constellation-Seven/Josiah/Index.htm

- Overlapping noise
- Too many animations
- No sense of togetherness.
- Garish.
- Plug in not working.
The creators of the website are trying to make religion seem more exciting and relatable through modern music and use of animation.
